Blue Gum Trails

Slow walks.
Muddy boots.

Field notes from weekends spent getting gently lost in the bush.

I walk, I take too many photos of the same eucalyptus, and I write it down here so I remember which car park had the good toilets. Difficulty is rated on the internationally unrecognised Tim Tam scale: how many you'll want at the top.

Trails

Alpine NP ยท VIC

Mount Feathertop via the Razorback

long day๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ

Ridge walking with views for days. The wind tried to take my hat twice and succeeded once. Start at Diamantina Hut and go early.

Notes for next time

More water than you think. The last climb looks short. It isn't. Hat strap: mandatory.

Wilsons Promontory ยท VIC

Mount Oberon summit

half day๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ

Wide track, steady climb, and the whole Prom laid out at the top. Did it for sunrise; shared it with one very unbothered wombat.

Notes for next time

Head torch for the pre-dawn start. Bring a jacket โ€” the summit is always ten degrees colder than the car park.

Gariwerd (Grampians) ยท VIC

The Pinnacle from Sundial

short๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ

Short and punchy, with sandstone slabs that look like frozen waves. The lookout fence is there for a reason, and the reason is the drop.

Notes for next time

Try the Grand Canyon approach from Wonderland next time. Longer, rockier, more fun.

Cathedral Range ยท VIC

Southern Traverse

scrambly๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ

Hands-on rock scrambling along a knife-edge ridge. Exhilarating, slightly terrifying, would do again. Not for wet days.

Notes for next time

Gloves. Proper shoes, not runners. Tell someone where you're going.

Werribee Gorge ยท VIC

Gorge Circuit

half day๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ

Close to Melbourne and better than it has any right to be. There's a bit where you shuffle along the rock face holding a cable. Peak fun.

Notes for next time

Skip it in high summer โ€” it bakes. Autumn and winter are perfect.

Blue Mountains ยท NSW

Grand Canyon Track

half day๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿซ

Down into a cool, ferny slot of a canyon, then all the stairs back up. Feels like walking through another planet.

Notes for next time

Weekday mornings. Everyone else had the same idea on Saturday.

Trail log

  1. Wildflowers are out in Gariwerd. I stopped every four metres. Average pace: geological.
  2. Frosty start at the Prom. Thermos of tea achieved legendary status.
  3. Autumn loop at Werribee Gorge. Saw a peregrine falcon. It did not see me, or it pretended not to.
  4. Too hot to walk. Wrote this website instead. Wombat helped.
